Therapy for when parts of you still feel stuck

You know your patterns, understand where they come from, and yet still find yourself caught in cycles of overwhelm, shutdown, or painful relationship patterns.

I help adults who experience these challenges because healing often requires more than insight alone.

In my practice, I specialize in helping people heal from the lasting effects of childhood trauma, attachment wounds, and chronic pain held in the mind, body, and nervous system. Using EMDR, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), and related trauma therapies within an integrative, relational framework, my clients make changes at the level where these patterns are held.

Does this sound familiar?

You've done a lot of thinking.Something still feels off

You understand your patterns, but they keep showing up anyway
You've tried therapy before and still feel stuck
Anxiety, conflict, or physical symptoms recur
You carry more than people around you realize
You feel emotionally overwhelmed, shut down, or disconnected
You don't know what "better" or "safe" is supposed to feel like
If this feels familiar, trauma-informed therapy may help you in ways traditional therapy has not.
Karen's approach to trauma psychotherapy

Healing work that goes beyond just talking

Evidence-Based

EMDR

An evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain process experiences that continue to feel emotionally stuck. Recognized by the APA and WHO as a primary treatment for PTSD.

Neuroscience-Based

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)

A slower, deeply neuroscience-based approach for shock trauma, attachment wounds, and early experiences that predate language or conscious memory.

Relational

Experiential and Integrative

Patterns of connection matter. Our earliest relationships shape our sense of safety and trust. These early patterns influence how we relate to ourselves and others throughout our lives.

Integrative

Spiritually Integrated Therapy

For clients who wish to include spirituality as part of their healing, Karen offers a grounded, respectful space to explore that dimension of life.

About Karen

Experienced, direct, and deeply present

Karen Sussan has spent 35 years helping people navigate anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and major life challenges. Her approach is thoughtful, relational, and honest.

I work with adults who are committed to their healing and ready to work on patterns that took years to form.

My work is not bound by rigid timelines or protocols, but unfolds collaboratively and responsively as a process with phases of deeper work, integrative pauses, periods of experiential, here-and-now coping exercises, and meaningful turning points, all at a pace that supports lasting change.

Karen offers services in person at her Suffern, NY office as well as online in both New York State and Florida State.

Is this fit for you?

Therapy works best when the fit is honest

This may be a good fit if…

  • You have the desire to seek therapy, not because someone else thinks you should.
  • You want to heal, not just get a quick fix.
  • You are open to incorporating experiential approaches that go beyond talk therapy.
  • You sense the therapeutic relationship is key.

This may not be the right fit if…

  • You are currently in an acute mental health crisis
  • You are court-ordered or mandated to attend therapy
  • You need intensive addiction or crisis stabilization services
  • You are set on short-term therapy.

Curious if this feels like the right fit?

I invite you to start with a consultation. No pressure, just a conversation to see whether working together makes sense.
